BC vs. UMass

Normally at this point in the football season, BC fans are still
Maintaining high aspirations for their Eagles. A trip to the Orange
Bowl is usually a possibility before October football begins. However,
this year is not a typical BC football season. For the first time
since 1991, BC is 0-3. There are a lot of reasons for BC’s horrible
start, injuries, youth, and a tougher schedule. But, the biggest
reason has to be poor coaching by Spaz and his assistants. There is a
lot of talent on both sides of the ball but, i don’t think they’ve
been giving the proper direction by the coaching staff let alone play
calling. Case in point last weekend, vs perennial ACC doormat, Duke,
BC had a chance to win the game with a chip shot FG. Spaz elected not
to center the ball on a 3rd and 1 play and therefore forced an angled
kick by PK Nate Freese. Freese missed the kick but I blame coach Spaz
for not putting the ball in the middle of the field. Spaz reaction to
the play called, “middle schmiddle.” I could go on and on about his
questionable play calling but his biggest complaint has to be his
negativity about the kids and program. The woe’s me attitude has grown
old! Calling his players young and fragile. We need a change @the
Heights and we need it soon! This program will not achieve under Spaz.

Enough of my rant, this weekend BC battles Umass. Umass comes into
town @ 2-0. Although, they are a FCS opponent, Umass should not be
taken lightly. They rank #19 in the FCS and have a lot of speed on the
offensive end. I don’t know what to expect this weekend. Rumors have
it that, injured RB Montel Harris will be playing. I’m not sure that’s
a smart move but guess whose making the play calling?? Spaz is trying
to save his job. Anything can happen. It’s supposed to be a wet day so
that will definitely help the underdog Minutemen. I think BC gets a W
but in a close one.  PREDICTION: BC 24-21

Tailgate: I’ll be bringing my son, Jackson with me and plan on getting
to BC around 1030. Depending on the weather, I most likely will not be
post game tailgating. I’ll be bringing blue berry muffins, veggie and
fruit platters. As well as beer and H20. Hope to see you guys there!

Wildcats vs Eagles, Game 1!

Game time Noon

Tailgate starts at 9am
EagleWalk at 9:45am

BC football season is here!  This season’s schedule is much more difficult than past years and the home opener vs the Wildcats will be a solid test for our Eagles. Northwestern is led by Heisman candidate Dan Persa, who is questionable for the game after recovering from off season surgery. If Persa is able to play, the depleted BC secondary better be ready since he is the difference maker for the Cats. They were 7-3 with him as a starter in 2010.  The key for the Eagles will be the running game.  BC’s best player, Montel Harris, is out for this game, so the load will be on Andre Williams, who was very good in his 2 starts last year. The Eagles will need Williams to hit the holes hard and make for short yardage situations for QB Chase Rettig. This game marks the dawn of a new offense for our Eagles, under the leadership of OC Kevin Rogers. Hopefully, the Eagles will be more enjoyable to watch on offense this season.

Greg’s Prediction:  Persa returns strong and the Eagles secondary struggles to stop him on 3rd and longs. However, Andre Williams abuses the clock, and Rettig hooks up with Colin Larmond for a late TD as BC beats Northwestern 20-17

Everyday is Game Day!

Everyday is Gameday! That’s the slogan for the 2011 Boston College Eagles football season. So the summer is flying by and college football is less than 2 weeks away. Last season, BC fans witnessed the heroic return of Mark Herzlich to the gridiron, the emergence of a superstar in Luke Keuchly and a true freshman, Chase Rettig, show lots of promise. Even though we were quite inept on the offensive end, BC still managed to get to San Francisco for a bowl game and finished with a 7-6 record.

The 2011 BC football season should be interesting. Rettig and the offense have a brand new Offenive Coordinator, in Kevin Rogers. Rogers should be a huge improvement over former OC Gary Nyquill, sorry Tranquill. Unfortunately, even though GT is gone his poor vanilla playbook is still affecting the 2011 season. Star RB Montel Harris, who is only 126 yards shy of the all time rushing record at BC, is injured yet again, and many think it’s due to being overworked by GT the last 2 seasons.  Hopefully Montel will be back on the field soon. Rettig and the offense really need him. This year BC will play 4 of it’s first 5 games at home, starting with, Northwestern on Saturday, September 3rd.  Week 2 will bring the Eagles down to Orlando to take on UCF. These first 2 games will show the nation how well BC will be in 2011. Both the Wildcats and Knights are predicted to battle atop their respected conferences. After a 3game home stand vs Duke, Umass and Wake Forest, BC goes on the road for a tough stretch. Any chance of getting to Charlotte for the ACC title game will need BC to win 2/3. That means beating Clemson, VaTech, and Maryland.  No gimmes there.

After the road trip, BC will host their biggest game of the season on ESPN Thursday Night football vs #5 Florida State. This game is sure to be wild!! BC finishes hosting Tom Obrien and his NC State Wolfpack before finishing on the road at rival Notre Dame and then The Scandal U, or Miami.  A difficult season for sure, especially with a young QB who could be missing his top weapon in Harris. At first glance I think BC will battle hard but in the end a 7-5 season seems likely.

With that quick preview, we come to the 2011 BC tailgaters! We’ve renewed our parking spot in the Commonwealth Ave garage and are welcoming all fellow Eagle fans to join us before kickoff for food, drinks, laughs and more. I’ll be posting each week what we’re bringing to the tailgate and feel free to bring anything and anyone along. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon.

Let’s go Eagles!!

BC vs. UVA

Wow, a 3 game winning streak!!

It wasn’t pretty but the Eagles held on last weekend to beat a resilient Duke squad in Durham, NC, 21-16.  BC needed a HUGE stand by the defense on 4th and goal from the 3 yard lineto hold onto the victory. BC is now sitting at 5-5 overall and just needs one more victory to clinch their 12th straight bowl appearance. I’m not sure how everyone feels about our recent success, I still think BC needs to fire Offensive Coordinator Gary Tranquill.  This year’s schedule was very favorable and as we can see by looking at the Atlantic Division standings the Division is still up for grabs.  A wasted opportunity!!

So what’s on tap for this weekend??  This weekend marks the Home Finale for the 2010 BC football season with the University of Virginia Cavaliers coming to the Heights.  The Wahoos enter this weekend’s game on a 2 game losing streak and are 4-6 overall. With their loss last weekend, to Maryland, the Wahoos are ineligible for a bowl game.  They will still be a good test for our Eagles.  UVA has the nation’s 25th best passing attack led by QB Verica.  The Wahoos will try to exploit our bend by don’t break secondary.  The UVA running game will have a tough time vs our stout running defense.  BC currently ranks #1 in the country in RUSH Defense averaging less than 75yds/game.  BC will again rely heavily on the ACC’s leading rusher Montel Harris, whom is over 1100yds for the season.  Harris should be able to have a BIG game vs the UVA rushing defense, they currently give up over 200yds per game on the ground.  It should be a battle within the trenches.

It’s also the last game we’ll get to see a true hero on the field for BC in senior LB Mark Herzlich.  We all know his remarkable story.  It will be a very special day for him as well as the other BC seniors.  Here’s hoping BC can continue it’s winning ways and beat those Wahoos this coming Saturday at Alunmni Stadium.

GO EAGLES!!!

Since it’s the Final Game of the season, it’s also our FINAL Tailgate of the year!  With the help of my amazing wife, it’s been a pleasure hosting this season’s BC tailgates.  I’d like to thank everyone for checking the webiste and helping make this season’s tailgating a huge success!
